Shooter, shooter, shooter, one after another ad infenitem. Is there no hope to break out of this monotony of First Person Shooters (FPS)? On Tuesday Mike and I headed up to New York for a special show put on by Microsoft
read about the show from Mike here
), and I got an answer to my question. There is a break in the endless cycle of mindless FPS titles, and it is Condemned: Criminal Origins. This title I got to play all by myself, with no interruptions from any staff or any other people (Mike did drop by from time to time to check it out), so I really had a chance to immerse myself in the experience. Not only did I get to play hands on with no interruptions, later I went back and found another guy playing who was much farther along in the game, giving me a chance to see if the game maintained the gameplay or died after the first missions.
You will play this FPS as FBI agent Ethan Thomas, whose pursuit of relentless serial killers leads him through urban environments filled with sociopaths lurking on the periphery of humanity. The thing that really sets this game apart from other cop games like, Max Payne, is that you will actually be doing some police work. You will have to investigate the crime scene (some of these are not for the weak of heart, I can`t imagine this game coming out anything below a M rating), gather evidence and track down the killer. Of course along the way you will run into cronies that will try and break your neck, but that`s why you have the trusty little gun.
Let’s talk about the weapons now.
Do not fool yourself into thinking that since you are a cop you will not be allowed to use deadly force, or that the only weapon you will get to use is your side arm. When a drugged up guy charges at you with a pipe in his hand, feel free to put two in the chest, one in the head. Then if you like, you can pick up his pipe and go bash heads in with it.
Before you pick up his pipe though you might want to take a closer look at it. When looking at a possible weapon you have the ability to compare it to your current weapon in hand. You will be given a quick breakdown on screen comparing the two weapons. If the new one would be faster or slower than your current (just compares better or worse, no actual stats are displayed), if it will do more or less damage and other useful comparisons.
Now, I promised you that this game was more than a standard FPS game, yet all I`ve really told you about thus far is nothing very different from any other FPS, so lets talk some more about how you investigate the crime scene.
You will arrive at the scene and will have to take in the environment and start to figure out what is going on. Once you have your bearings you will then need to look for and collecting all kinds of phorensics evidence. For that task you will have all kinds of fun gadgets to play with to help you find, record then transmit the evidence back to the lab for analysis. When you find a place that you believe might have some evidence to be collected you bring out one of your toys and begin to scan for evidence that can only been seen with these toys. Once you have located some evidence you will bring out a digital recorded, once you have the evidence in frame you will then capture it and send it back to the lab. Your partner back at the HQ will then analyze the data for you and let you know more information about the evidence, which will sometimes include some nice cinematic showing where the evidence came from. You will then use this information to track down the bad guys, and bring them to justice.
Now the game itself is a beautiful experience.
Every game I have seen for the Xbox 360 has blown my mind, and this game is definitely no exception. From the wonderful toys you get to play with, to the fantastic details of the many objects in the world to the careful animations of the people in the world. I was very impressed when I was watching the other guy play, and when a bad guy attacked him; he simply reached up and snapped his neck. The physics was incredible; there is no other way to describe it.
